Curriculum
Children in our Reception year follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, "Development Matters". Years 1 and 2 follow the 2014 National Curriculum for English, mathematics, science, history, geography, computing, design technology, art and design, music and physical education. We follow the Leicestershire's agreed syllabus for RE. In addition to these statutory subjects, our children also learn Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE), including compulsory Relationships Education.
Our curriculum has been designed to ensure full coverage of Early Years Foundation Stage and National Curriculum in an engaging way. All subjects are progressive and include carefully sequenced lessons to deepen pupil knowledge and extend vocabulary.
As part of English, we use a rigorous approach to teaching synthetic phonics, based upon the Anima Phonics scheme. Through guided reading, small group work and one-to-one, children are taught to read a vibrant collection of story and non-fiction books. This includes Anima Phonics reading books, Collins Big Cat phonics books and our school book band system to ensure that they develop a wide range of reading skills. We teach writing through a genre-led approach, building on their skills as they progress through the school. Children follow the Nelson Handwriting and Grammar and Punctuation schemes.
In maths, children are taught using the White Rose Reception & Primary Scheme of Learning. The White Rose mastery scheme focuses on depth rather than acceleration, ensuring that key concepts are fully grasped before moving on. We also follow the NCTEM Mastering Number programme throughout the school.
We use carefully selected schemes to support the teaching of foundation subjects. These include:
Our long-term curriculum plans can be found below. Teachers provide regular updates regarding the curriculum and how to support the children at home through Class Dojo, the half-termly school newsletter and parents' evening appointments.
