Curriculum
Children in our Reception year follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, "Development Matters". Years 1 and 2 follow the 2014 National Curriculum for English, mathematics, science, history, geography, computing, design technology, art and design, music and physical education. We follow the Leicester Diocese agreed syllabus for RE, based upon Leicestershire's agreed syllabus. In addition to these statutory subjects, our children also learn Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE).
We aim, as far as possible, to teach all subjects through a thematic approach, where links are made across the curriculum. Details of our Long-term Plan of themes can be found here. Note that Early Years Foundation Stage themes are tailored to prepare for National Curriculum learning at Year 1.
As part of English, children are taught a rigorous approach to synthetic phonics, based upon "Anima Phonics" in Reception and "Letters and Sounds" in Years 1 and 2. Children follow the Nelson Handwriting and Grammar and Punctuation schemes. In music we use the “Chranga” scheme.
We use "Everyone's Welcome" and Cambridgeshire Personal Development Scheme to teach PSHCE.
Children are taught to read through a vibrant collection of story books and non-fiction books, drawing from a wide range of schemes and real books. Children are taught through guided reading, small group work and one-to-one reading. All books follow the "Book Bands" system of progression. Children who need it additionally receive extra reading in class or more formal intervention such as Reading Recovery or Fischer Family Trust one-to-one intervention.
In maths children in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 are taught using the White Rose Reception & Primary Scheme of Learning with a mastery approach for all children.
In order to support parents in helping their children with their learning, we offer curriculum presentations twice a year which cover a range of methods such as phonics and maths calculations.
If you require further information or paper copies of any of these documents, please contact the school office (tel: 01455 239391). Thank you.
